Washington, D.C., January 17, 2021: In a Business Insider article, correspondent Maddy Simpson analyzes the current state of diversity of President-Elect Joe Biden cabinet, and interviews Inclusive America Co-Founder Mark Hanis on the values of representation.
“President-elect Joe Biden is pushing for diversity in his administration, saying his Cabinet would “look like the country” and be the most diverse in history.
Mark Hanis, the founder of the nonprofit Inclusive America, which promotes government diversity, said LGBTQ representation matters, as do all forms of representation, for three reasons: increased productivity and effectiveness, a more moral democracy, and a legally compliant work environment.
Employment policies that embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion are instrumental in attaining the goal of a just and effective federal government,” Hanis said. “By necessity, this commitment must be woven into the fabric of federal recruitment, hiring, retention, and promotion.
“There are biases of both self-selection and how those institutions admit people,” Hanis said. “Politically appointed positions are not competitive, and therefore perpetuate a lot of the biases.”
